Mountain Ridge Food Forest

Signature ProjectFood forestTerracingSoil building

From barren shale to living abundance.

The project

A challenging half-acre hillside — thin soil over shale, serious erosion potential — transformed into a productive, self-sustaining ecosystem with perennial edible gardens installed around the entire house.

What was built

  • Custom terracing to maximize growing space and prevent erosion
  • Over 100 edible and medicinal species carefully selected and installed
  • Beneficial soil biology introduced to build living soil systems on poor ground
  • Native wildflowers integrated for year-round pollinator support
  • A dedicated medicinal garden installation

Why it matters

Mountain Ridge demonstrates regenerative agriculture principles at residential scale: a site most contractors would write off as “bad soil” became a food-producing landscape precisely because the design started with soil biology instead of fighting the hillside.

The outcome

A self-sustaining food production system that gets more abundant every season — food, medicine, habitat, and beauty on ground that once grew almost nothing.
